"Promoting healthy living in pre-teens through after school
enrichment activities and positive peer to peer development."
According to a national research survey, America After 3PM, conducted in 2014 by the Afterschool Alliance non-profit organization, more than 20% of kids--over 11 million youth--are left home alone after school everyday in the United States.
At North Shore Youth Council, we believe that after school hours should be for growth, socialization, and learning--not engaging in destructive behaviors. We recognize that positive intervention in middle school-age youth during this interval of the day is crucial to promoting healthy development and preventing a substance-free lifestyle. That's why NSYC offers support and enrichment for pre-teens beyond the school bell in the form of a drop-in recreation program in the Mt. Sinai and Rocky Point School Districts, serving families five days a week when school is in session, Monday thru Friday, from dismissal to 6:00 PM.
Evaluations conducted by the U.S. Department of Education since the 1980s have shown that middle school afternoon programs have the potential to drastically reduce dropout rates and significantly accelerate academic growth.
What makes Drop-In unique?
Our middle school afternoon program attracts and retains youth because it is driven by the needs and wants of the attending adolescents. The programs are based on the choices of our youth, their cultures, their individual needs, their personalities, and their own social engagement. Day to day indoor and outdoor activities are freely structured and include things like informal intramural sports, art projects, video game play, passive and active games, special themed activities geared for pre-teens, creative life skills workshops, plus homework and study help.
NSYC provides quality programming that lets middle schoolers...
