With few opportunities for healthy social engagement or safe recreational activities available on Friday nights, today's youth are most at risk for participating in destructive behaviors that can lead to unhealthy development, harmful mental health, or substance abuse.
Develop "positive alternative" initiatives that deter kids from being exposed to dangerous situations, and instead, encourages them and their peers to live healthy, responsible lives. North Shore Youth Council engages children and teens beyond the school bell and helps fill the void in the accessibility and variety of positive social and recreational activities available to young individuals in the north shore communities.
How We Accomplish It:
Our staff provide safe, supervised, drug- and alcohol-free environments where local youth and teens can have good, clean fun on Friday nights. We offer a variety of activities for elementary, middle, and high school students that help develop character and build essential life skills. Our Friday night recreation initiative features Open Gym events with intramural play, Game Nights that cater to youth's interests in things like video games, board games, and billiards, plus Open Mic Nights that highlight safe teen socialization and opportunities for the artistically and musically inclined.
North Shore Youth Council is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community-based organization, funded in part by the Town of Brookhaven, the County of Suffolk, the State of New York, the North Shore Consortium, and public and private donations.
